Sabelo Mlangeni
Uniting ‘open landscapes’ (Ngiyobona Phambili)
At the Institute I will work on expanding and completing the photographic series Ngiyobona Phambili. I will also use my time in Paris to develop the series as a book, providing another way to access the work.
Sabelo Mlangeni is a South African documentary photographer and visual artist who exhibited “The Royal House of Allure” recently at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Sabelo Mlangeni is a graduate of the Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg. He is best known for his series “Country Girls,” which presents an intimate portrait of queer life within the rural areas of Mpumalanga province. His ongoing work – Ngiyobona Phambili (“I will cross the bridge when I get there”) – explores space, time, and intimacy in a reflection on the politics and longing for belonging.
